Noise, Air Quality and Contaminated Land Assessments – Gloucester Railway Triangle
Appointed by GVA Grimley, ACCON UK carried out comprehensive assessments for noise, air quality and contaminated land for the Masterplan in relation to the Greater Railway Triangle Area as prepared by the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company (GHURC).
The completed Masterplan has served as a vital function in promoting the regeneration of an extensive area on the eastern periphery of Gloucester City Centre and informed the submission and determination of detailed planning applications for the identified component land parcels/phases.
The purpose of these assessments was to determine to what extent these issues constrain the residential development of the site.
The extensive noise assessment undertaken assessed the both road traffic and railway noise and to what extent noise constrains residential development of the site, with both noise sources modelled together in CadnaA. Various mitigation options were reviewed to determine whether additional land could be brought forward for residential development.
The detailed air quality assessment measured the overall levels of hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulates (PM10) in the vicinity of the site. DMRB calculations and CadnaA air pollution modelling suggest that in the area of the proposed development, it is unlikely that air quality limits will be exceeded or constrain residential development.
The railway triangle has previously been used for various industrial uses, primarily railway sidings; therefore the issue of contaminated land was also addressed in a Phase 1 study.
